Goal: $5,000.00
Specific Need
Our Emergency Shelter project seeks to fill a void in Rice County by securing a space in the community of Lyons for individuals who are targets of domestic and/or sexual violence. We are currently under contract with a rent-to-own property in Lyons. We are specifically seeking at least $5,000 to make necessary improvements prior to opening the facility for use in January 2026. This includes purchasing/installing a washer and dryer, making improvements to the downstairs bathroom, purchasing/installing at least one mini split for proper air flow, installing security equipment, and creating a kennel space for pets in the backyard/garage.Mission
History Harbor Foundation's two main purposes are to provide a public venue for community empowerment through a humanities-based educational support system while also providing a safe space for individuals who have experienced domestic and/or sexual violence, oppression, and/or persecution. In cooperation with a network of agencies serving the needs of victims, our mission will focus primarily on rural communities in need. Overall, this servant leadership model aims to regenerate an interest in public education for all while also providing the means by which victim survivors may learn to thrive independently, free from violence and in possession of the tools necessary for full civic and economic participation in a world often stacked against them.
Profile
History Harbor Foundation maintains two properties in Lyons, Kansas. The first is History Harbor, an educational space located at 510 East Ave. S in Lyons. Currently, this facility is open to the public several times during the week and has a humanities-based library collection of nearly 5,000 works. The second property is the shelter space known as Harbor House. We are working with BrightHouse out of Hutchinson to help provide services to victim survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence in Rice County.
